Elle the Pit Bull Named 2013 American Hero Dog

December 27, 2013

At the 2013 American Humane Association Hero Dog Awards, held in October in Los Angeles, a pit bull from North Carolina named Elle won the American Hero Dog Award. Elle teaches children about dog safety and helps them to overcome their fear of dogs. Each year, more than 2 million children suffer from dog bites. Through working with therapy dogs like Elle, these children learn how to interact with dogs in a safe, respectful manner.

Elle also serves as a therapy dog in a program called Tail Wagging Tales, which helps children learn how to read. She regularly makes visits to schools and retirement homes and combats the negative stereotypes associated with pit bulls and other misunderstood breeds. In addition, she plays a key role in programs designed to create good dog parents and ensure the continued health and safety of pets.

Elle’s human companion Leah Brewer joined her at the awards ceremony. The title American Hero Dog comes with a sizable donation from the Hero Dog Awards to Elle’s charity partner, Hand in Paw, an animal-assisted therapy organization.
